Advent Devotional - Day 21

DECEMBER 21 – Mark 10: 23-27
By: Matthew Swope

Amidst their questioning, Jesus reminds his disciples (and us!) that “all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). These words resonate within scripture almost as loudly and importantly as those in John 3:16. They remind us of our most intrinsic need for faith. Amidst doubt and our inability to comprehend God’s ways, there is the calming assurance that God can do anything. Of course the difficult part for us is to “give it to God” and trust in His ways; only then can we be used to enact God’s will in the world.

There is no greater statement of God’s omnipotence than the birth of our Lord. Born to a carpenter and of a virgin, Jesus came to us in a lowly stable. He rose from a humble background to be the most influential man to have ever lived. He sacrificed himself for our sin and our ultimate redemption, unworthy though we may be. God’s work in and through His son, Jesus Christ, is the ultimate success story, and the most fervent reminder that “all things are possible with God.”

Dear God, as we celebrate this season of Advent, help us to trust in you and your ability to accomplish great things in our lives and in our community. Open our hearts in faith and love as we prepare for the birth of Jesus. Amen.
